Golf Driving Tips

Golf can be a tiring game when you’re
constantly “muscling” the golf ball out of the deep rough. Penalty strokes can add up quickly as well. The
best way to improve your golf score is to stay out of trouble. These golf driving tips should help you
make consistent drives down the middle of the fairway.

Golf Driving Tips: Accuracy
before Power
It must be in a golfers DNA. You stand
on the tee and look down the fairway on a long par 5. You see the flag fluttering in the distance and you
realize it’s a long way off. You address the ball and let loose with everything you have. Nine times out of
ten, your shot is to the left, right, or 100 yards in front of the tee.
It can be difficult to learn how to take
a nice, easy swing at about 80% of your maximum power. We’ve all seen the golfer who takes a seemingly
effortless tee shot, hit the ball 275 yards, and land in the middle of the fairway. The reason is that he has
more control and can manage the fundamentals of driving better with a relaxed swing. The power will come
naturally, concentrate on hitting a clean shot every time and your score will begin to drop
dramatically.

Tips: Keep Your Chin Up Slightly
It’s been drilled into us from the first
time we picked up a golf club. Keep your head down and your eye on the ball. It’s great advice. The problem
many golfers have is they exaggerate their posture by tucking in their chin slightly. When the chin is tucked
in too much it prevents the shoulders from turning smoothly. Go ahead and take a practice swing now with your
chin tucked in. Did you notice the tightness in your swing? Now lift your chin up an inch or two while
maintaining eye contact with the ball. Can you feel the difference? Try this on the practice range and see if
doesn’t improve your power.

Tips: Swing With the Whole Body
The distance on your drives is the
result of the stored power in the body that is released upon impact. If you watch the pros, you’ll see that
they have a big shoulder turn on their backswing while their hips stay relatively stable. This is known as
“coiling the body.” To do this, keep your back knee slightly bent and firmly planted while rotating your
shoulders all the way back. When you uncoil on the downswing, rotate through the
ball.
If you have trouble doing this, a golf
fitness program may be in order. Flexibility and core training will condition your body for more power in
your swing.

Tips: Have the Right Driver for Your Swing
Type?
Using the right driver for your swing
type is crucial in increasing power and distance. Beginners, intermediates, juniors, and ladies will have
more success with a flexible, graphite shaft. The added flexibility will help you to swing with more power. A
driver with a higher loft angle will help get the ball in the air quickly and generally produce straighter
golf shots as well. Advanced golfers can add distance and accuracy by using a stiffer shaft and reducing the
loft of the driver.
